“Question and Answer on ‘The Ghost Brahman’ (Rapid Reader, Class 11)”

1.) How did the ghost get into the Brahman’s house in the village?

Answer:
After his marriage, the poor Brahman had no money to support his mother and wife. There was no work in his village, so he decided to go to another country to earn money. He said he would return only after earning enough. He took his mother’s blessings and left.

That evening, a ghost took the exact form of the Brahman and entered the house. The wife felt surprised and asked why he had returned so soon. The ghost said that the day was unlucky, so he came back after earning some money. The wife believed him. The mother and neighbors also did not doubt him because he looked exactly like the Brahman. In this way, the ghost entered the house and lived there for many years.

2.) How did the poor Brahman manage to marry his bride?

Answer:
The poor Brahman found it very difficult to get married because he was not rich. He needed a large amount of money to give to the bride’s parents. So, he went from house to house in the village and begged rich people for money.

After much effort, he collected enough money. This shows how important money was in society at that time. Because of his poor condition, the Brahman was forced to beg. Finally, he arranged the money, got married, and brought his wife home to his mother.

3.) Why did the poor Brahman have to leave home and go to another country?

Answer:
The poor Brahman spent all his money on marriage expenses. After marriage, he had nothing left to support his wife and mother. He could not find any work in his village.

So, he told his mother about his problem and decided to go to a faraway country to earn money. Due to lack of money and work, he was forced to leave home.

4.) How did the king behave when the Brahman went to him for judgment?

Answer:
When the real Brahman returned home, he saw the ghost living with his family. Everyone believed that the ghost was the real Brahman. Feeling helpless, he went to the king for justice.

The king was confused because both looked exactly the same. He could not decide who was real. Every day the Brahman went to the king, but the king kept postponing the case. The Brahman returned sad and hopeless each day.

5.) How did the neat-herd king help the Brahman get rid of the ghost Brahman?

Answer:
Every day, the king passed a place where cowherds played and chose a boy as their king. This neat-herd king noticed the Brahman crying daily and called him to hear his story.

After hearing everything, the neat-herd king planned a trick. He asked the real king’s permission to solve the case. The next day, he told both the Brahman and the ghost to enter a small bottle. Only the ghost could change size and enter it. Once inside, the neat-herd king closed the bottle and asked the Brahman to throw it into the sea.

Thus, the ghost was destroyed, and the Brahman got back his home, mother, and wife.

6.Why did the poor Brahman leave home for a long time?
What did the ghost-Brahman do while he left home for a long time? How did the Brahman’s wife and mother react to the arrival of the ghost-Brahman? [2+1+2]

The poor Brahmin set out on a long journey, hoping to earn enough money to support his family. However, his departure took an eerie turn.
On the very evening he left, a ghost took on the Brahmin’s exact appearance and entered the house. Because the disguise was perfect, no one suspected the truth. Even the neighbors were convinced that the Brahmin had simply cut his travels short and returned home.
The Brahmin’s family was completely misled by the apparition:
* The Wife: His newly married wife believed the ghost was her true husband. Though surprised by his sudden return, she simply asked why he had come back so soon. The ghost cleverly claimed that the day was “unlucky” for travel and boasted that he had already managed to acquire some money.
* The Mother: Like the wife, his mother had no reason to doubt the ghost’s identity, accepting him into the home without question.
